Term 3 Week 8 News

On Tuesday Leah came to perform a dance and to lead a workshop. We all really enjoyed the session and learnt some new dance moves and terms. On Thursday we worked in threes to write a recount of the workshop. Here's a couple of pieces from the recounts (the full recounts are on the classroom wall):

Guess what happened on Tuesday! Leah came to our school to perform a dance in front of Room 5 and room 6. Then it was our turn to dance. We helped to create a dance. Leah told us to think of five things to do. Leah said to make it into a dance sentence. Then we worked with a buddy to perform to the rest of the class.

One exciting sunny morning Leah came to dance with us. Leah did a solo. Then we had to get involved. First we had to do a warm up so we wouldn’t get injured. We did the banana, the prune, the lion face and the lemon face. When Leah said banana we jumped and said banana in a loud voice. When Leah said lion we put out our claws and said roar!

On Thursday we attended a Maths Expo. We worked in groups to solve different maths challenges. Our favorite challenge was Pack It, which involved packing eight shapes into a box. Some of the other activities were:  race monkeys down a ladder, count footsteps around a map, work out how may logs the truck could carry without being overweight and build a bridge.

Mathletics News

Mathletics is proving popular at the moment, which is great. Today another person gained a Gold Mathletics certificate, bringing our class total to 4.

Ka pai to Nicholas.

Several people have made the NZ Top 100 Students and the World Top 100 Students charts.
Congratulations to George who came in at number 18 on the NZ chart and 66 on the World chart.

I do my best to keep up with the Top 100, but the rankings, which are done on a daily basis, can change very quickly. If you see your name on the chart, please take a screen shot and email it to me so that we can celebrate and I can post it on the blog. Keep up the good work with Mathletics.

Baking Day

Today Asher's Mum, Mindy, came to help us make pumpkin pie. We know that pumpkin is a fruit so we made a dessert with it. We were also able to put our new learning about fractions into practice as we had to measure 1/4 teaspoons of spices and 1/2 cups of milk and cream.
We all had a taste of the pie and some of us even came back for seconds. Not everyone liked it though.
A big THANK YOU to Mindy for sharing your pumpkin pie recipe with us.

As part of our topic on Growing Plants we are growing grass heads. We have started a diary so we can keep track of what happens and how long it takes for the grass to grow. Come in and check out our grass heads. Some children still need to bring in a jar before they can make their grass head. Please send a jar with a smaller opening so the head does not fall into the jar.

Tie a knot in the stocking
Fill the jar with water
