Term 4 Week 10

The production was amazing. Everyone played their part extremely well and delivered their lines clearly. I am very proud of the way Room 5 stepped up. Look out Hollywood!
Here's some snippets from our writing about the production:

On Monday we did the production. I was so good the people were clapping. We had swords and chest plates. It was so much fun. Callum

I was excited because I had a speaking part and wore a head mike. Joshua

In the production I was a guard. My line was: ‘Grab him, men. The master will reward us for catching this thief.’ I liked being a guard because I got to march and to wear a silver tunic. Zach

Then it was our turn. I was Joseph. I didn’t have that many lines. I had an amazing night. Ollie

I was a villager who was scrubbing the floor. First I was excited but then I saw all the people and I got a bit nervous. Ryan

This morning we caught up on weekend sport. Elspeth competed in a swim meet at Jellie Park. She received two ribbons, including one for getting a Personal Best. Ka pai, Elspeth.
2014 has been a busy year with lots of learning happening. Everyone has worked hard and made wonderful progress. Ka pai everyone.

Our Mathletics Stars are Isabella, Joe, George and Peter.
Well done to everyone who achieved Mathletics certificates this year. You can use Mathletics over the holidays - Live Mathletics is a great way to improve your Basic Facts knowledge.

Congratulations to Maria, Lachlan, James, Sophie, Connie and Asher. You have all worked very hard to improve your reading.

Term 3 Week 8 News

On Tuesday Leah came to perform a dance and to lead a workshop. We all really enjoyed the session and learnt some new dance moves and terms. On Thursday we worked in threes to write a recount of the workshop. Here's a couple of pieces from the recounts (the full recounts are on the classroom wall):

Guess what happened on Tuesday! Leah came to our school to perform a dance in front of Room 5 and room 6. Then it was our turn to dance. We helped to create a dance. Leah told us to think of five things to do. Leah said to make it into a dance sentence. Then we worked with a buddy to perform to the rest of the class.
By Ashleigh, James and Sophie

One exciting sunny morning Leah came to dance with us. Leah did a solo. Then we had to get involved. First we had to do a warm up so we wouldn’t get injured. We did the banana, the prune, the lion face and the lemon face. When Leah said banana we jumped and said banana in a loud voice. When Leah said lion we put out our claws and said roar!

On Thursday we attended a Maths Expo. We worked in groups to solve different maths challenges. Our favorite challenge was Pack It, which involved packing eight shapes into a box. Some of the other activities were:  race monkeys down a ladder, count footsteps around a map, work out how may logs the truck could carry without being overweight and build a bridge.

Term 3 Week 5

Today Ryan received a certificate in assembly.
Ka wani kei, Ryan, we are proud of you.

Ollie received the Homework certificate. Well done, Ollie, keep writing your interesting sentences.

In our topic we have been learning about fruit and vegetables. We know that a fruit has seeds inside and grows on trees or bushes and a vegetable does not have seeds inside and grows under the ground. We found out that pumpkin, tomatoes and corn are fruit even though we eat them as vegetables. Check out our Pic Collage showing how we sorted the fruit and vegetables.

We had our last hockey session this afternoon. We have enjoyed learning hockey skills and some of us are talking about playing hockey for winter sport at school.

Term 2 Week 4

This week's 'Star of the Week' is Bridie.
Congratulations, Bridie, it's great to have you in Room 5.

This morning was our first swim day. Thank you so much for having your child at school early. It meant that we were ready to leave school on time. The children enjoyed their lessons and coped with the freezing outside weather after being in a warm environment. Some children appreciated having a beanie to wear after their swim. If you do send a beanie with your child, please ensure it is named. Here's Ryan listening to his swim instructor. I plan to take some more photos tomorrow.

Today Elspeth turned 8.
We sang 'Happy Birthday' and wished her all the best as an 8 year old.

The top three Week 3 Mathletes are: Joe, Isabella and Bridie. Well done and keep up the good work.
Bridie also made the Top 100 NZ Students Leader Board, coming in at number 67. A great achievement Bridie.

After the games on Saturday Hamish (rugby) and James (rugby) were named 'Player of the Day' for their respective teams. Congratulations boys.

Term 2 Week 3 Assembly Certificate

At this week's assembly Ephrem was presented with a certificate.
Ka pai, Ephrem, we are proud of you.

Nicholas received the Homework Award for his spelling sentences. Well done, Nicholas, keep up the good work.

On Friday five members of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra came to share some music with us. Peter was chosen to blow the reed of a clarinet. After a few puffs Peter managed to make a sound. He was very pleased with his efforts - maybe he is a clarinetist in the making.
Here's some of our thoughts about this visit:

Today we saw the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. It was fun. I felt very happy because I like listening to music. It felt like I was in a dream. I really liked the harp. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was quiet. Sometimes it was soft, sometimes it was fast. By Aysha

Today we saw some people. One had a harp, one had a flute, one had a violin and there was a person with a violin but it was a big violin (a cello). By Maria

Today I watched the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra with their instruments. I was amazed. I liked when they played The Simpsons because it was funny. It was a little bit loud. I have never seen a violin that was so small. By Ryan

Joe had his 7th birthday on Saturday so we sang 'Happy Birthday' to him. We wish you a great year being 7.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Junior School Mass this morning. The children were well behaved and those who greeted, read, prayed and did the data projector should be proud of how well they performed their roles. Thanks Joe, Addison, Elspeth, George and Peter.

This week we are swimming at Wharenui Pool. Half of Room 5 will leave school at 9am with Room 3 and the other half will leave at 9:30am with Room 6. I will be traveling with the second group. If you have any questions about swimming, please just ask me.
Swim week is great but it does change our routines so this week we will be reading plays instead of group reading (children are still expected to choose a book from their browsing boxes to bring home to read each night) and we will not have spelling homework. Again, if you have any questions or concerns please come in and talk to me.

It's great to have so many Room 5 people involved in sport.

Term 1 Week 9 'Star of the Week' and Other News

This week's 'Star of the Week' is Elspeth.
Ka pai, Elspeth, it's great to have you in Room 5.

The top three Mathletes for Week 8 are Isabella, Addie and Peter.
Addie also made the NZ Top 100 Students list and received the Mathlete of the week trophy.
Well done everyone who got a Bronze Certificate last week.

Ryan received a Principal's Award for his story about his pet. Congratulations, Ryan, your story is very entertaining.
I've got a pet fish at my home. His name is Sam. I've named him Sam because I think Sam's name is cool. His hobby is eating. I wish to touch my fish but if I touch my fish he would be scared. He is a bit fat because his hobby is eating. Imagine if I had a pet cat. He would try to eat my fish, Sam.
