Term 4 Week 3

This morning Room 5 attended the 9am Mass. The children were amazing and I am very proud of them. Thank you so much for having them at school in plenty of time, we were all seated before Mass started.

At Discovery Time we made cinnamon rolls. A big Thank You to Mindy, Megan and Evan for your expertise in the kitchen. The result was some very yummy cinnamon rolls.

At today's school assembly Isabella received a certificate.
Ka pai, Isabella, we are proud of you.

Yesterday we chose our own groups for reading, then we chose our book. After we finished reading our book we made up a way of presenting the story to the rest of the class. One group made a poster and the rest made their story into a play. I was very impressed with how well everyone co-operated and with the quality produced in a short time frame. Ka pai, Room 5, you are confident, connected, actively involved learners.

Elspeth, Neave, Sophie, Hamish, Joshua and Connie
'Don't You Laugh At Me!
Alex, Callum, Ephrem, Asher and Lachlan
'Mr Whisper'
Ashleigh, Maria and Zach
'Mrs Grindy's Shoes'
Isabella, Addison, Uriel and Bridie
'My Sloppy Tiger'
Peter, Joe, Nicholas and George
'Ratty Tatty'
There were some very excited children in Room 5 today. The Fathers and Kids weekend should be a great time for you all - keep safe and have lots of fun. Hopefully there'll be a bit of sleeping along the way, too! Mums - enjoy some quiet time to yourselves.

Term 4 Week 3

We've had a busy start to this short week. Yesterday we went to the Botanical Gardens with the rest of the Junior Syndicate. What an awesome day we had. The children were amazing and enjoyed all they saw and did. A big THANK YOU to the parents who were able to come with us and look after a small group of children, we couldn't have managed without you.

We have had several 'Players of the Day'. Congratulations to cricketer Hamish and Touch players Joe, Ollie and Joshua. What a sporty lot Room 5 children are.

Congratulations, too, to Peter who won the recent Ray White colouring competition.

Remember to be at school before 8:45am on Friday so that we can be seated in church before the 9am Mass starts.

Term 4 Week 2

Thank you for attending the school assembly today. The children did an amazing job of teaching us about the Rosary, then leading us in saying a decade of the Rosary.
Kei whaha hihi ahau o kotou - I am very proud of them.

George received the Special Character Award.

George, you are a kind and considerate class member.
You are a confident, connected, actively involved learner,
always taking responsibility for making the most of opportunities.
You are a positive role model, both inside the classroom and in the playground.
Your positive attitude to all aspects of school life shows that you are ‘Stepping Up for Success’.
We are blest to have you in Room 5 and Christ the King School.

Peter received a certificate and Lachlan was presented with his Gold Mathletics certificate. Ka pai, boys, we are proud of you.
Enjoy the long weekend. Remember to wear mufti on Tuesday and to bring a big lunch and a water bottle, ready for our trip to the Botanical Gardens.

Touch started on Tuesday. Everyone enjoyed their first game and played well.
George was named 'Player of the Day' for his team. Ka pai George.

Fractions

We have been learning about fractions. There are some important facts about fractions - each piece or group must be the same; the denominator, which is down, tells us how many pieces the whole is divided into; the numerator, which is up, tells how many pieces of the fraction we have. We know that the bigger the denominator, the smaller the fraction piece. We have made posters to share our learning. Come in and see them.

We enjoyed learning about fractions, especially when we used M&Ms to work out fractions of groups!

Tem 4 Week 2 'Star of the Week'

This week's 'Star of the Week' is Neave.
Ka pai, Neave, it's great to have you in Room 5.

Tomorrow we start our production practices. The auditions are over and everyone has been given a part - check out the list on the hall door. The Year 3s will be given their scripts and then they'll be learning their lines. We are already getting excited about this highlight of the year.

Tomorrow Touch starts - meet at 5pm at Nunweek Park, games start at 5:30pm.

On Friday we will be leading the school assembly. Please be seated in the hall before 12md.

Urgent: We need books for the fair. Please bring these along and place in a box outside Room 5.

Term 4 Week 1

The first week of term 4 is now over. We have started the term with a roar. We have had our auditions for the production and should find out our parts early next week. We have published our holiday stories, learning how to use the Dropbox on the computers or a new dictation app on the iPad along the way. (Come in to the classroom to read our stories and look at our illustrations). We enjoyed Discovery Time today, trying new things, working with the Room 6 and Room 4 children and being Actively Involved learners. The highlight of the week was watching 'Matilda' - our postponed end of Term 3 reward.

There was no school assembly today as the Middle and Senior students had their athletics sports.

However we did award a homework certificate. Congratulations to Lachlan for the good work you did on your spelling sentences.

Notes for Week 2:
The Run, Jump, Throw Display scheduled for Tuesday has been CANCELLED.
Touch Rugby starts on Tuesday - 5:30pm at Nunweek Park.
On Friday 24 October we will be leading the School Assembly. Family members are welcome. The assembly starts at 12md, so it is advisable to be in the hall a bit before 12md.

Fair News:
Thank you for your support with the Fair so far. A great collection of books, toys and clothing is accumulating outside Room 5. Please feel free to add to this collection. We are now collecting grocery items for the raffle. These can be brought in any time and placed in the box in the classroom.
Raffle Tickets - how are these going? Please return money to either the office or the classroom as soon as you have sold them. More tickets are available if you can sell more. Please see me or the office ladies.

Enjoy the weekend.

Term 4 Week 1

Welcome back to the last term for 2014. It was great to see everyone today and to catch up on the holidays. Sounds like it was a good break.

Yesterday Alex had his 8th birthday. We sang 'Happy Birthday' and wished him all the best for the coming year.

Over the holidays we had a little bit of Mathletics success. Congratulations to Elspeth who received her first Silver Mathletics certificate.

Congratulations, too, to Joshua (18th in the World) and George (4th in NZ, 24th in the World) who both made the Top Students Board.

Term 4 will be busy with a number of things happening. Unfortunately the first event on our calendar has had to be cancelled. We will not be having  our Run, Jump, Throw Display as the newly sown grass cannot be used for at least four weeks and there is not enough room left to fit in all the events.
We have planned a visit to the Botanic Gardens for Week 3. A notice and an email about this will be sent home soon.
Our end of year production, which is on Monday 15 December, will take up a lot of time this term. Auditions begin tomorrow. Every Year 3 will have a speaking part, written especially for them. The children are well prepared for this with the plays they have performed during the year.
The fair is not long away now. Room 5 is responsible for the book stall. Please let me know if you can help either on the day (Sunday 9 November) or in the lead up. There are boxes outside Room 5 for books, as well as for clothes and toys. Any donations are most welcome. A fair notice will be coming home soon. How are you getting on with selling raffle tickets? Let me know if you'd like more. We will be collecting grocery items soon.

With the warmer weather comes some health concerns. Everyone needs to wear a school sunhat at break times. Please ensure your child's hat is clearly named so that the children can easily keep track of their hat. Sun screen is provided, thanks to the Parent Council, and children can use this before they go outside. Each child is expected to bring a water bottle into the classroom each day so that they can get a drink when they need one. Thank you for your support with these things.

If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to come in and chat.
